RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The No. 25 Virginia women’s golf team holds the lead after the opening day of competition at the San Diego State Classic at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The Cavaliers posted rounds of 7-over 295 and even par 288 for a first-day total of 583. UVA is one stroke ahead of No. 6 South Carolina.

The Cavaliers were led by All-American Amanda Sambach who recorded back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to stand tied for second at 4-under 140.  She and two other players trail Oregon’s Kiara Romero by a single shot for the lead.

The Cavaliers’ Megan Propeck is in eighth place at 1-over 145 after shooting rounds of 74 and 71. UVA freshman Jaclyn LaHa, playing in her home state, is in 11th position at 4-over 148. She posted scores of 75 and 73.

Rebecaa Skoler had scores of 77 and 74 to be 20th at 151 while Celeste Valinho rounded out Virginia’s scoring with rounds of 76 to be 24th at 152.

The final round of the event gets underway Tuesday morning.
