No. 4 Virginia Wins Rain-Delayed Match at Miami
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis team (16-4, 8-0 ACC) closed out a 4-1 victory at Miami (10-8, 2-5 ACC) on Monday (March 25) at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
The match started on Friday morning at 8 a.m. but went into a rain delay and was ultimately postponed. Play resumed on Monday at noon with the Cavaliers wrapping up the victory.
In order to try to get the match in before the rain, the two teams played singles matches first. With Virginia clinching the victory in singles, doubles were not contested.
Senior Chris Rodesch gave UVA a 1-0 lead in the match on Friday, completing his 6-1, 6-2 win against Antonio Prat in 80 minutes, 10 minutes ahead of the suspension.
Friday’s match was also being played simultaneously with a women’s match, so only five singles courts were available. Grad student Edoardo Graziani had only started warming up for his match when play was suspended.
On Monday, it took senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg 11 minutes to complete his 6-1, 7-5 victory against Vladislav Melnic to put UVA ahead 2-0. Five minutes later, Martin Katz of Miami closed out a straight-set win on two to make it 2-1.
Senior Alexander Kiefer won a three-setter, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 against Adrien Burdet on four to make it 3-1.
Graziani blazed through his match, the only one to be played solely on Monday, winning 6-0, 6-1 against Alejandro Arraya on court six to clinch the victory.
