Trio of Cavaliers Earn ACC Athlete of the Week Honors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. βΒ The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday (April 2) that Will Anthony, Gary Martin and Jenny Schilling of the Virginia track and field program earned ACC Athlete of the Week status after a strong performance this weekend.
At the Raleigh Relays, Will Anthony shattered the school record in the men’s 10,000m under the lights crossing the line in 28:21.93 to earn Men’s ACC Rookie of the Week. Anthony bested the previous program record of 28:44.22 held by Zach Herriot from 2017 by nearly 20 seconds. Picking up his first collegiate win, the Whitby, Poriua, New Zealand native also took down the freshman record. The previous record was held by Adam Visokay at 29:14.50 from 2014. The freshman currently ranks first in the ACC and 17th in the NCAA this season.
In his outdoor season opener, Gary Martin executed his race from the front pack in the final heat of the menβs 5000m. Martin broke the school record kicking in the final 100 meters to cross the line in 13:31.51 to finish second and earn Men’s ACC Athlete of the Week honors. The Warminster, Pa. currently ranks first in the ACC and second in the NCAA this season.

Jenny Schilling took down the 36-year-old school record crossing the line in 32.44.19 to earn Women’s ACC Athlete of the Week honors. Schilling bested the previous record held by Patty Matava at 32:58.64 from 1987 by nearly 14 seconds. Schilling stuck with the leaders for the duration of the race and ultimately finished fifth overall (fourth collegiate) in the invitational section. The Leesburg, Va. native currently ranks third in the ACC and seventh in the NCAA this season.

Anthony, Martin and Schilling are the first Cavaliers to earn ACC weekly honors this outdoor track & field season. In the most recent USTFCCCA ranking, the men’s team checks in at 16th while the women are 18th.
