CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team is in sixth place after the opening two rounds of UVA’s Lewis Chitengwa Memorial at Birdwood Golf Course. The Cavaliers posted scores of 7-under 284 during the morning round and 11-over 295 in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 4-over 572. Seventh-ranked Tennessee leads the field at 23-under 545. Sixth-ranked Florida State is in second place at 6-under 562.

All-American Ben James led the Cavaliers with scores of 5-under 66 and 2-over 73 for a first-day total of 3-under 139 to stand in eighth place. Deven Patel is 18th at 143 (72-72), Josh Duangmanee is 30th at 145 (70-75), Bryan Lee is 43rd at 147 (71-76) and Paul Chang rounded out UVA’s scoring at 151 (70-81) to stand 66th.

UVA was in second place, one shot behind Tennessee, after the opening round but struggled in the afternoon when the winds picked up at Birdwood Golf Course. The Volunteers were led by Bryce Lewis who shot 8-under 63, including six birdies over a seven-hole stretch during his afternoon back nine. Florida State’s Luke Clanton is tied with Lewis at the top of the leaderboard at 8-under 134.

The Cavalier B-Team posted rounds of 5-over 289 and 6-over 290 to stand 10th in the 14-team field at 11-over 579.

Virginia’s B-team was led by Grayson Wotnosky and Liam Powderly, who are tied for 25th at 2-over 144. During the first round, Wotnosky posted a career-best score of 69 while Powderly did the same by shooting 71. Chris Fosdick is in 43rd place at 147 (77-70), George Duangmanee is 50th at 148 (74-74) along with Henry Daly (75-73). Benny Haggin, competing as an individual, is in 75th place at 156 (80-76).
