No. 10 Virginia Plays Final Non-Conference Contest Wednesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 10 Virginia (35-12) will host George Washington (26-21) in the final non-conference matchup of the regular season on Wednesday (May 8). First pitch on ACCNX and WINA (98.9 FM/1070 AM) is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Disharoon Park.

• Virginia enters the penultimate week of the college baseball regular season as a consensus top-10 team and is No. 10 in the latest D1Baseball.com top-25. The Cavaliers have been inside the top-15 for eight consecutive weeks and are a consensus top-10 team for the third time (week 6, week 9 & week 12).
• Wednesday’s contest against George Washington will be Virginia’s first game action since May 1, a 10-0 run-rule win over Navy in seven innings. The Cavaliers had six days off from competition for final exams.
• Under head coach Brian O’Connor, Virginia is 16-2 against non-conference opponents after the exam break.
• Virginia is 21-2 in non-conference play this season. Virginia is one of seven teams nationally with fewer than three non-conference losses – Texas A&M (0), Georgia (1), Florida State (1), Tennessee (2), Arkansas (2), TCU (2), Virginia (2).

KEY FIGURES FROM FIRST MEETING

• UVA and GW combined for 38 runs in a 26-12 Cavalier victory on March 6 in Washington, D.C. It was the most combined runs between the two schools in 42 total meetings.
• Virginia hit eight home runs at George Washington on March 6, the second-most in a single-game in program history.
• A school-record, seven different Cavaliers homered in the contest including Henry Ford who left the yard twice.
• It marked back-to-back seasons that UVA has scored 26 runs in a game and is the 10th time since 1950 UVA has scored 26 or more runs in a game.
• As a team, UVA accumulated 24 hits, the most since racking up 25 against Longwood last year. The Cavaliers accumulated 54 total bases in the contest, the most in a game in the last 25 years.
• Freshman Eric Becker collected five hits (four singles, one double) in UVA’s 26-12 win. The five hits were the most in a game by any UVA freshman in the last 25 years. His seven at bats were the most by any UVA player since 2015 when Christian Lowry, Daniel Pinero and Kenny Towns all had eight at bats in UVA’s 18-inning game against Marist.

ON THE MOUND

• First year Bryson Moore will make a midweek start for the fourth-straight week. The righthander is coming of is longest start, pitching into the third inning at VCU last Tuesday. He was credited with the win on a predetermined staff day, his second collegiate victory.
• Over the course of three career starts, Moore has allowed two runs over 5.1 innings of work. In three starts he’s fanned two batters and walked three.
• In the last 31 innings pitched, the Cavalier pitching staff has allowed four runs, all came on a grand slam in the seventh inning at VCU on April 30.
• Virginia is coming off its fourth shutout of the season after blanking Navy, 10-0 in seven innings. It was the first shutout of the seven-inning variety for Virginia since a clean sheet against Georgia Tech in the 2015 ACC Tournament.
• Beginning with his April 9 outing against VCU, Chase Hungate has been one of UVA’s most consistent arms out of the bullpen. Over his last six appearances, he his 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA over 16.1 innings pitched. He has issued one walk and struck out five.
• Aidan Teel was credited with his team-leading fifth save of the year in an 8-4 win at VCU on April 30. It was his first since March 5 against Penn State. The righthander struck out four batters in a career-high 2.1 innings last Tuesday.

• As a team, Virginia has 82 home runs, one shy of matching the school record set by the 2023 team. The three highest single-season home run totals have occurred in the last three seasons.
• Griff O’Ferrall is currently sits in sole possession of ninth place on UVA’s career hits list. He’s three hits shy of matching Ryan Zimmerman (250) for the eighth most in program history. O’Ferrall set UVA’s single-season record for hits in 2023, compiling 108 as the leadoff man for UVA’s College World Series team.

• O’Ferrall is also climbing UVA’s all-time runs list and has crossed the plate 178 times in three seasons, the sixth-most of any Cavalier.

• Ethan Anderson took over the No. 3 spot on UVA’s career doubles mark with a two-bagger against Navy on May 5. Anderson has 55 career doubles, four shy of Steven Proscia’s 59 from 2009-11.

• Despite a dormant weekend, Virginia still ranks second in the country in hits with 574, 14 ahead of Morehead State.
• UVA ranks in the top-10 in the nation in five other categories: batting average (3rd – .337), doubles (6th – 118), runs (6th – 454), sacrifice flies (4th – 34), scoring (7th – 9.7 rpg). The Cavaliers are ranked 11th in the country with a .566 team slugging percentage.
• Virginia scored double-digit runs 23 times this season and is 20-3 when scoring 10 or more runs in a game.
• UVA leads the ACC in batting average, doubles, hits, on-base percentage, runs and sacrifice flies and scoring.

PLAYER NOTABLES

• Griff O’Ferrall is statistically the toughest batter in the ACC to strikeout. He has struck out 18 times in 216 at bats. O’Ferrall’s 69 hits are the fourth-most in the ACC.
• Ethan Anderson is UVA’s top hitter over the last 10 games, batting .385 (15-for-39 with four doubles 10 runs scored and two RBI. He has reached base safely in 19-straight games, tied for the longest active streak on the team (Eric Becker – 19).
• Henry Godbout has homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. In the two midweek games against VCU and Navy he was 5-for-8 with three runs scored and four RBI.
• Henry Ford’s 57 RBI are the most of any freshman in the country. He is six hit shy of Merrimack’s Bryce Dawson’s 72 for the NCAA freshman lead.
• On Tuesday at VCU, Harrison Didawick cracked his 17th home run of the year, the fifth-most in a single season in program history. The 17 jacks rank eighth in the ACC. Didawick has scored 60 runs the second-most in the league.
