Virginia Heads to LSU for NCAA Regional
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team opens play at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La., on Monday, May 13. The 54-hole event runs through Wednesday at LSU’s University Club. Virginia is the No. 2 seed in the 14-team field. The top five finishers from six NCAA regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Cavaliers’ lineup includes the same five players who competed at the ACC Championships: George Duangmanee, Josh Duangmanee, Ben James, Bryan Lee and Deven Patel. Liam Powderly will start the tournament as UVA’s alternate.
Virginia enters the postseason ranked No. 12 by the NCAA Golf Rankings (May 9). James is ranked No. 33 in the individual rankings while Bryan Lee is No. 47.
Format
The three-day regional format calls for a single-round of play Monday through Wednesday. Play starts each day at 8 a.m. CT. The Cavaliers are paired with Auburn and Texas Tech during Monday’s opening round. Those teams will go off the 1st tee starting at 8 a.m. CT.

Regional History
The regional berth marks the 27th time since 1990 the Cavaliers have competed in postseason play. Virginia is looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 19th time in its history. Last year the Cavaliers finished third at the Las Vegas Regional. It was the best-ever finish by a UVA team at a regional site. UVA shot 49-under, 815, the lowest ever by a UVA team at a regional site.
As a freshman, James shared medalist honors with San Francisco’s Matthew Anderson. That duo finished at 20-under 196. James shot 7-under 65 during the final round after posting scores of 65 and 66 on the event’s opening two days. James became the first Cavalier to win a NCAA Regional.
At University Club
Virginia played in the 2017 NCAA Regional held at LSU’s University Club. The Cavaliers placed fourth (+17, 881) to advance to the NCAA Championships. Senior Derek Bard led UVA with a 12th-place finish at 4-over 220. Current PGATour member Jimmy Stanger was tied for 17th (+6, 222) along with teammate Thomas Walsh.
All-ACC
James and Lee were named to the 2024 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team this season. It is the first time Lee has been honored while James was selected for the second consecutive year. He was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2023.
The ACC
Virginia is one of nine ACC schools participating in this year’s championship. Also making the tournament are: Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Wake Forest.
