Former Cavaliers Begin Track & Field Competition in Paris
PARIS – Trio of former Cavaliers began competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Friday (August 2) as Ashley Anumba and Halle Hazzard made their Olympic debut in the women’s discus throw and 100m dash.
Kick starting competition for the former Cavaliers was Halle Hazzard of Grenada in the women’s 100m dash preliminary round. With a strong start, Hazzard ran her way to a second-place finish in the second heat of competition clocking 11.88. The top three in each heat and the next five fastest times advance. Hazzard owns a personal best of 11.29 from May of this year as well as a season best of 11.34.
About an hour after securing her spot in the preliminary round, Hazzard was back in the blocks for the women’s 100m dash first round. Coming out of lane two, Hazzard gets off to a slower start than the rest of the field leading her to cross the line in 11.70. Her time was good for eighth place in heat seven and 57th overall among first round competitors.
In the ring, Ashley Anumba of Nigeria threw for 58.83m/193-0 on her third attempt for her best mark of the day in the women’s discus throw. As the first thrower in her qualification group, Anumba threw for 57.23m/187-9 before fouling her second throw. To qualify for the final, athletes must achieve the qualification standard of 64.00m (Q) or be one of the top 12 performers between the two qualifying groups. Her mark was good for 14th in Group A and 29th overall.
In his third consecutive Olympic Games, Filip Mihaljevic of Croatia threw for 20.09m/65-11 on his opening throw of the competition before launching one out 20.75m/68-1 on his third and final attempt in the men’s shot put. His mark was good for seventh place in the qualifying Group A. To qualify to the final, athletes must achieve the qualification standard (Q) of 21.35m/70-0.5 or be one of the top 12 performances in the field between the two qualifying groups. With his 14th place finish overall, Mihaljevic narrowly missed qualifying to the final by two spots.
Olympic track and field events continue tomorrow, Saturday, August 3 as Andrentte Knight competes as a member of Team Jamaica in the 4x400m Mixed Relay final.
