CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golfer Paul Chang was eliminated from the U.S. Amateur Championship during the round of 32. He was defeated 2&1 by Tyler Mawhinney.

Chang led 1Up after the front nine before Mawhinney won the next two holes to take a lead he never relinquished. He secured the win when Chang made bogey and Mawhinney recorded a par on the par-3, 17th hole.

It marked the second consecutive year Chang advanced to at least the round of 32 at the USGA event. Last year Chang advanced to the round of 16 at the event. He was one of four Cavaliers in the field. It marked the second consecutive year the UVA program had at least three golfers playing in the nation’s top amateur event.

Virginia will open its season Sept. 9 at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio.
