UVA Looks to Extend Win Streak; Opens Home Campaign with Cavalier Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (3-0) open its 2024 home campaign this weekend (Sept. 6-7), when it hosts the annual Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers challenge Coastal Carolina (0-3) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before competing in a doubleheader on Saturday against Hofstra (2-1) at noon and a rematch with the Chanticleers at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, CCU and the Pride kick off Cavalier Classic action Friday at noon.
Admission to this weekend’s tournament is free to the public. All three UVA matches are set to stream on ACC Network Extra.

SEASON OVERVIEW
- This year marks the 46th season of Virginia Volleyball, which held its inaugural season in 1979.
- In 45 complete seasons, UVA is 676-766 (.469) all-time.
- The Cavaliers are set to host 16 home matches in 2024, including the second-ever in John Paul Jones Arena against Miami on Oct. 6.
- Head coach Shannon Wells is entering her fourth season at the helm.
SERIES HISTORY
- Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series with UVA, 2-1. Virginia won the inaugural matchup in 1997, but the Chanticleers swept the previous two meetings, including last year’s neutral-site match at UMBC (20-25, 17-25, 22-25). Also in last year’s contest, UVA libero Milan Gomillion posted a season-high 27 digs, which tied the UVA record by an individual in a three-set match.
- Hofstra leads the all-time series, which began in 1984, 3-7. The Pride were winners of the first seven meetings, but UVA has swept the last three matchups dating back to 1992. The Cavaliers and Hofstra last went head-to-head Maryland Invite in 2021, which marked Shannon Wells’ first career victory as head coach.
HOT START
- Last weekend, Virginia recorded three straight sweeps over Marist, William & Mary and Old Dominion to win ODU’s Quest for the Crown tournament.
- As of Sept. 3, UVA was only one of nine out of 337 Division-I teams to have won every set played so far this season.
- UVA is off to its first 3-0 start since 2014 and its three consecutive sweeps to begin the season are a first since 2003.
- Elayna Duprey (co-MVP), Milan Gomillion (co-MVP) and Abby Tadder were named to the all-tournament for their performances last weekend.
VIRGINIA WELCOMES SEVEN NEWCOMERS IN 2023
- Of UVA’s 17 players on its 2024 roster, seven of them are new to the program.
- The Cavaliers’ roster features three transfers Kadynce Boothe (OH) from Tennessee, Kate Dean (MB) from Eastern Illinois and Elayna Duprey (OH) from Virginia Tech.
- Virginia’s freshmen, which make up the nation’s No. 26 signing class of 2023 according to PrepDig.com, consist of Sarah Brodner (OH/RS), Zoey Dood (S), Teagan Hogan (DS/L) and Becca Wight (RS).
