Fralin Family Football Head Coach Tony Elliott met with the media Tuesday to preview the Cavaliers' upcoming matchup at Coastal Carolina (Sept. 21).

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virgina (2-1) looks to head into its first bye week on a high note as the Cavaliers travel to undefeated Coastal Carolina (3-0) Saturday (Sept. 21). Opening kickoff from Brooks Stadium is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

Inside Saturday’s Matchup 

  • Virginia and Coastal Carolina will meet for the first time in program history. 
  • The two teams were scheduled to play on Nov. 19, 2022 at Scott Stadium but the contest was canceled due to the tragedy on Grounds that claimed the lives of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry on Nov. 13, 2022. 
  • The two teams will also play next season on Aug. 30 in Charlottesville. 
  • Virginia will play a Sun Belt team for the third-straight season. The Cavaliers are 5-4 all-time against current Sun Belt members (JMU – 2-2; ODU – 0-2; Troy – 1-0; Southern Miss – 0-2). 
  • Coastal Carolina is one of 31 teams nationally with three wins and one of 43 unbeaten teams remaining in FBS. Including the Chanticleers (3-0), UVA has four unbeaten teams remaining on its schedule – Louisville (2-0), North Carolina (3-0), Pitt (3-0). 
  • Virginia has won two of its first three games for the second time under third-year head coach Tony Elliott. The Cavaliers were 2-1 to start the year in his inaugural campaign in 2022. 
  • The Cavaliers are looking to record three wins in its first four games for the first time since 2019 when it started 4-0. Virginia has won three (or more) of its first four games four times in the last 16 years (2019 – 4-0; 2018 – 3-1; 2017 – 3-1). 
  • UVA has played Maryland under the lights of Scott Stadium twice, 1992 and 2008, winning both contests. 
  • Maryland leads the all-time series against UVA 45-32-2 and has won four of the last five. The two teams first met in 1919 in Charlottesville. 
  • UVA has not defeated Maryland at Scott Stadium since 2008 (31-0). 
  • Last season, UVA led Maryland, 14-0, in the first quarter before surrendering 42 unanswered points. 

Top Storylines 

  • The Cavaliers are coming off a 27-13 loss at the hands of former ACC rival Maryland in week three. The Cavaliers had a 13-7 lead at the half but were held scoreless over the final 30 minutes of play. 
  • UVA committed four turnovers last week, tied for the most in a game in the Tony Elliott era (Maryland, 2023 and Georgia Tech in 2022). Despite the giveaways, the UVA defense yielded only seven points off the four offensive miscues. 
  • Virginia will be on the road against on non-Power-4/5 team for the first time since 2021 when they visited BYU. Prior to that, UVA visited Notre Dame (2019) and Boise State (2017) in non-Power 4/5 action. 
  • Virginia’s streak of nine-consecutive games with a 100-yard receiver came to end on Saturday against Maryland. Wideout Malachi Fields is third in the ACC in receiving yards with 248. He is six receptions shy of 100 for his career. 
  • Anthony Colandrea has made nine career starts and accounted for 10 200-yard passing efforts and three 300-yard performances. He is 140 yards away from 3,000 passing yards for his career. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW 

3.33 – UVA is the least penalized team in the ACC and has the sixth-fewest penalties per game in FBS. 

5.3 – Solo tackles per game for Jonas Sanker, the second most in the ACC. He led the ACC and ranked fourth in FBS in the category last year. 

47.6 – Daniel Sparks ranks third in the country and second in the ACC in punting average. He has four downed inside the 20-yard line and four over 50 yards. 

330 – Yards per game of total offense averaged through three games by Anthony Colandrea, fourth most in the ACC. 

ON THE HORIZON
With no game scheduled next weekend, Virginia will look to take advantage of its first of two bye weeks this season. The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they host Boston College (2-1) for UVA’s annual Homecomings game. 

The BC kickoff time is expected to be announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday (Sept. 23).
