SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Virginia men’s golf team combined for 27 birdies in the first round of the Valero Texas Collegiate at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course. The Cavaliers are tied for fourth place after 18 holes of competition.

The 27 Birdies were tied with Ole Miss for the most of any team in round one competition.

Sophomore Josh Duagmanee had the low round of the day for UVA after carding a 5-under, 67 putting him in a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard. He played a bogey-less round and totaled five birdies, two on the front nine and three on the back. Duangmanee’s 67 is tied for his lowest round as a Cavalier, matching a round-two, 67 at last year’s Linger Longer Invitational.

Senior Paul Chang and junior Ben James each turned first round scores of 3-under 69. Five of James’ seven birdies on the day came on his final nine holes. All four of James’ rounds of collegiate competition this fall have been under par.

Deven Patel, playing as an individual, posted the lowest score of any the 15 unattached competitors after he shot a 3-under 69. He is tied with teammates Chang and James for the ninth place. It marked Patel’s lowest round of the 2024 fall season.

The tournament continues on Sunday (Sept. 22) with round two (18 holes) and concludes on Monday with the final round.
