CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in an intrasquad meet that also featured the men’s and women’s teams from Navy on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia’s orange squad topped the blue squad in a meet featuring non-traditional races, including the 100 and 300-yard IM and 50 and 150-yard races for each stroke.

Virginia won all of the races on the women’s side and all but one on the men’s side.

Virginia’s first traditional meet of the 2024-25 will be on Saturday, Oct. 18 when the teams take on Florida. The Gator men are ranked No. 2 in the preseason CSCAA poll while the women are No. 3.

MEET NOTES

  • Sophomore Claire Curzan won three events in her Cavalier debut. The transfer from Stanford who trained at the AFC last season but took a year off from collegiate competition, won the 50 and 150 yard back and the 150 free
  • Senior Gretchen Walsh won the 150 fly with a UVA record time of 1:20.31, finishing 3.37 seconds ahead of second place, and also won the 50 fly (22.68) and the 100 IM (52.63)
  • In the distance races, sophomore Cavan Gormsen took the 600 free (5:47.35) while junior Aimee Canny won the 300 (2:46.87). Canny also won the 150 breast (1:33.48)
  • Freshman Leah Hayes won the 300 IM (3:02.54)
  • David King posted a UVA record time of 2:32.82 in the 300 Free
  • Junior Jack Aikins, who redshirted last season, returned to the pool with wins in the 150 free (1:09.75) and 100 IM (48.61). He also took the 150 back in a UVA record time of 1:14.14
  • Freshman Spencer Nicholas won the 50 back (21.79) and 150 fly (1:16.56). He also won the 50 fly in a UVA record time of 20.82
  • Grad student Noah Nichols won the 50 and 150 breast (24.46 and 1:24.46)
  • The UVA fourth years won the battle of the age groups in the 200 medley relay, followed by the third years, first years and second years
  • The UVA orange team won 823-802 against the blue team. Navy’s blue team topped the gold team 543-488
  • The UVA divers competed as exhibitions
