Cavaliers Fall to UNCG at Home
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Following a late Spartan goal, the Virginia men’s soccer team (2-4-3) fell to UNCG (4-1-3) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 1) at Klöckner Stadium.
Goals (Assist)
13’ UNCG – Okawa (Dovlo)
67’ Virginia – Burns (Mikula, Mangarov)
86’ UNCG – Longo
How it Happened:
- The Cavaliers started on the front foot generating a handful of chances quickly as Cesar Cordova, Triton Beauvois and Victor Akoum all worked their way into threatening positions and managed attempts at goal.
- UNCG broke the deadlock against the run of play when in the 13th minute as Yoshiya Okawa scored from inside the penalty area to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
- Trailing by a goal, Virginia responded quickly as Beauvois registered another attempt that was lifted over the bar just seconds after the opening goal. Virginia would outshoot their opponents by a margin of 7-1 in the first half but went into the locker room chasing the game at 1-0.
- UVA was once again on the attack at the start of the second half registering a pair of goal-scoring chances inside the first 15 minutes following the kickoff.
- Seven minutes past the hour mark, Virginia had its breakthrough. Off a free kick 15 yards outside the penalty area, Danny Mangarov arched his attempt to the far post where Luc Mikula headed it back across the face of goal for a sliding Luke Burns to tap in for 1-1.
- Virginia pressed on looking for the winning goal and created one of its best scoring chances of the day when Burns played a ball in for Hayes Wood who steered his attempt wide of the far post.
- In the 86th minute of play, the Cavaliers were hit on the counter attack as Daniel Longo took advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area and finished his chance for 2-1.
Additional Notes:
- David Okorie made his first career start playing 71 minutes in the midfield
- Luke Burns scored the first goal of his collegiate career
- Luc Mikula registered his first assist as a Cavalier, and the first of his four-season collegiate career
