WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team (13-3, 6-2 ACC) picked up a 2-1 victory on the road against Wake Forest (7-6, 2-6 ACC) in double overtime in the final game of the regular season Friday (Nov. 1) at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just 10 minutes into the first quarter, Virginia earned what would be the first of two corners in the first half. Jans Croon found the back of the net with the assist from Madi Orsi and Emily Field. With a battle in the middle of the field, Virginia tallied four shots to Wake Forest’s one shot in the first half.In the first minute of play in the third quarter, Wake Forest’s Faye Janse leveled the score at 1-1 off of an assist from Mia Montag. Unable to respond, the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.The score continued to remain equal after the first 10-minute overtime period. Nearing the end of the second overtime, Dani Mendez-Trendler found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining to give the Cavaliers the edge 2-1.

  • Virginia finishes in a three-way tie for second place in the ACC with Duke and Boston College, but will be the No. 4 seed by virtue of tiebreakers
  • Jans Croon netted her fourth goal of the season

  • Tyler Kennedy played the two overtime periods in goal. She did not face a shot, picking up her 12th victory of the season

  • The Cavaliers will be back in action next week as the team travels back to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the ACC Field Hockey Tournament Nov. 5-8.
  • Virginia opens play on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a quarterfinal match-up against 5-seed Syracuse at 12:30 p.m.
