WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– Virginia men’s tennis sophomore Rafael Jódar advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Winston-Salem Challenger on Friday (Sept. 12) in Winston-Salem, N.C,

Jódar opened his run with a 7-5, 6-1 win against qualifier Gavin Goode in the Round of 32, before defeating wild card Luca Pow in the second round. Jódar defeated 3-seed Mitchell Krueger 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Krueger is ranked No. 248 in the world.

Jódar was edged 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals by Trevor Svajda.

Jódar is 23-9 in ATP Challenger and ITF World Tennis Tour matches this year and 10-2 in his last 12.

Jódar will compete in the Columbus Challenger next week. He will face 4-seed Nicolas Mejia in the first round. Mejia is ranked No. 200 in the world ATP rankings with Jódar ranked No. 369.
