SERIES HISTORY

  • The Cavaliers own a 12-0 all-time record against the Seawolves, and this year's contest marks the first of the series since 2018.
  • Saturday's game also marks the third consecutive of the series at LaValle Stadium.
  • Virginia and Stony Brook went head-to-head each year from 2006-13, including twice in 2010, when the two teams met at LaValle Stadium in the NCAA quarterfinals.
  • Three of the last five meetings between the Cavaliers and Seawolves have been decided by one goal, including the 2010 quarterfinals and the most recent contest in 2018.
  • In 2018, UVA led by as many seven goals [15-8] in the fourth quarter before SBU nearly mounted a miraculous comeback, scoring the final six goals of the game. UVA held on to win 15-14 despite the Seawolves being man-up for the final 16 seconds of play.
  • Michael Kraus became the 16th player in program history to notch 10 points in a game, tallying five goals and five assists in the 2018 meeting. UVA faceoff specialist Justin Schwenk finished 20 for 25 at the center X.
  • In addition to Kraus' 10-point outing, the series has seen a number of other standout performances. In 2009, Garrett Billings became only the third UVA player – at the time – to score eight goals in a game. He also added three assists. Billings' 11 points are tied for No. 3 in program single-game history.

SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES

  • Stony Brook is in search of its first win of the season having dropped its first two games, at Sacred Heart (Feb. 6) and its home opener against No. 18 Rutgers (Feb. 14).
  • Last season, SBU finished 7-7 overall and 3-4 in CAA play. The Seawolves played in six one-goal games in 2025 and were 2-4 in such contests.
  • Sophomore midfielder Kian McCoy and senior faceoff specialist Robbie Smith were both named to this year's Preseason All-CAA Team. Both McCoy and Smith were Second Team All-CAA last year.
  • Smith has yet to make an appearance this season.
  • The Seawolves are led by head coach Anthony Gilardi, a 2004 graduate of Ohio State. Under Gilardi, Stony Brook has finished with at least a .500 record in five of the last six seasons.
  • SBU opponents are averaging 65.5 percent at the faceoff X this season.

McCABE MILLON’S IMPRESSIVE START

  • Junior attackman McCabe Millon is one of only two Division I players averaging at least 8.0 points per game (for games played through Feb. 16).
  • Among all ACC players, Millon is tied for first in goals (4.0) per game and leads the conference in both assists (4.0) and points per game.
  • Millon posted four goals and five assists against Colgate (Feb. 8) and four goals and three assists at No. 8 Richmond (Feb. 14).
  • His five assists and nine points in UVA's 19-14 season-opening win over Colgate are both career highs.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Virginia dropped its road opener at No. 8 Richmond (2-0), 18-12, at Robins Stadium last Saturday (Feb. 14).
  • The Spiders scored seven consecutive goals between the second and third quarters to run away with their second straight win of the series.
  • Millon’s seven points were a game high among all players.
  • UVA faceoff specialist Griff Meyer finished 17 for 28 at the faceoff X. His 17 wins are the most in a game by a UVA freshman since 2019.
  • Richmond goaltender Connor Knight dazzled in net for the Spiders, finishing with a career-high 18 saves to earn his second win of the year.

LARS TIFFANY & KEVIN CASSESE RETURN TO THE SIDELINES OF LAVALLE STADIUM

  • For the first time in over 20 years, UVA head coach Lars Tiffany and associate head coach Kevin Cassese return as a tandem to the sidelines of LaValle Stadium, but this time as Cavalier coaches.
  • On Aug. 10, 2004, Tiffany was named Stony Brook men's lacrosse's fourth head coach and spent two seasons (2005-06) in that position.
  • Tiffany hired Cassese, one of the ACC's most accomplished midfielders, as an assistant coach. Cassese spent one season (2005) at SBU. He directed the Seawolves' offense, including their man-up unit, which led all Division I teams in extra-man scoring percentage.
  • Tiffany, Cassese and the rest of the 2005 Seawolves finished with a 10-6 overall record.
  • After the 2006 season, Tiffany returned to his alma mater, Brown University, as head coach, a position he held from 2007-16. In his final season, he led the Bears to Championship Weekend before accepting the head coaching position at UVA.
  • Following the 2005 season, Cassese also returned to his alma mater, Duke, before eventually serving as Lehigh's head coach for 16 years (2008-23).

RETURNING HOME TO LONG ISLAND

  • Four members of Virginia’s roster return home to Long Island for Saturday’s game at Stony Brook.
  • Cassese and assistant coach Logan Greco (Hauppauge), who won a national championship as a defenseman on the Cavaliers' 2019 team, are also Long Island natives.

ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers return home to host No. 14 Johns Hopkins (3-0) next Saturday, Feb. 28.
  • The game, which is set for noon on ACC Network Extra, will be UVA's first at Klöckner Stadium after its season opener was relocated inside due to frigid temperatures.
  • Next Saturday’s contest marks the 100th meeting of the most-played rivalry in Division I lacrosse history and the 20th anniversary of the Doyle Smith Cup’s inception.
