Cavaliers Look to Rebound, Travel to No. 10 Maryland Saturday

Opening faceoff from SECU Stadium is set for 1 p.m. on Big Ten Network

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In search of its third straight road win and first over a top-10 opponent since the 2024 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, Virginia (3-3) travels to No. 10 Maryland (2-3) Saturday afternoon (March 14). Opening faceoff from SECU Stadium (College Park, Md.) is set for 1 p.m. on Big Ten Network.

The Cavaliers are looking to bounce back after falling 13-9 to Towson at Klöckner Stadium last weekend.

The meeting between Virginia and Maryland is officially the 99th in one of college lacrosse’s most storied series, which began in 1926.

The Terrapins are the third ranked opponent for UVA this season, having previously faced then-No. 8 Richmond (Feb. 14) and then-No. 16 Johns Hopkins (Feb. 18).

A WIN FOR THE CAVALIERS WOULD...

  • Be Virginia's first victory over a ranked opponent since May 19, 2024, when the Cavaliers edged then-No. 3 Johns Hopkins in double overtime of the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
  • Mark the second consecutive for the Hoos at SECU Stadium. UVA topped then-No. 5 Maryland 14-10 on March 16, 2024.
  • Also be UVA's first true road win over a top-10 foe since the 2024 regular-season meeting against the Terps at SECU Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Maryland leads the all-time series with Virginia, which began in 1926, 52-46.
  • On Saturday, Virginia will face Maryland in the 99th official meeting all-time, which is second most with Johns Hopkins (100) for the most head-to-head matchups in UVA history.
  • In 1973, the two teams played an exhibition at the Hero's Classic, a multi-team event based in Baltimore that did not use NCAA rules.
  • In the last meeting between the two teams at SECU Stadium, the Hoos snapped the Terrapins' three-game win streak in the series with a 14-10 victory in the regular season on March 16, 2024.
  • In the 2024 regular-season meeting SECU Stadium, former UVA midfielder Griffin Schutz (4g, 2a) tied his career high of six points to lead No. 4 Virginia in its 14-10 victory over No. 5 Maryland. The win marked UVA’s first in the series since defeating the Terrapins in the 2021 NCAA championship game. Then-freshman McCabe Millon recorded his fifth hat trick in just his seventh collegiate game.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS

  • Maryland is led by head coach John Tillman, who has guided the Terrapins to four Championship Weekend appearances in the last five seasons, winning national titles in 2017 and 2022.
  • UMD fell to top-seeded Cornell – Tillman's alma mater – 13-10 in last year's national title game at Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass.)
  • After opening the 2026 season at No. 1 in both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse preseason polls, the Terrapins are 2-3 this year, but have played a formidable schedule thus far.
  • Maryland has dropped its last two games at SECU Stadium to top-ranked Notre Dame (Feb. 28), 11-8, and then-No. 12 Princeton (Feb. 21), 13-12.
  • Last week, the Terps posted a 13-8 road win over Delaware (March 6), scoring the first five goals of the game and never trailed.
  • UMD is led by faceoff specialist Henry Dodge, who leads the nation in faceoff win percentage (.712).
  • Including Dodge, the Terps have five USILA Preseason All-Americans: Eric Kolar (SSDM), Will Schaller (D), Eric Spanos (A) and AJ Larkin (LSM). Spanos, a First Team All-Big Ten selection last year, has missed UMD's last two games.

LAST TIME OUT

  • A six-goal run bridging the first and second quarters propelled Towson past No. 17 Virginia in a 13-9 decision at Klöckner Stadium last Saturday night (March 7).
  • The loss snapped Virginia’s 15-game win streak in the series, which had stood unbroken since 2001. Prior to last week's contest, the Tigers had not defeated the Cavaliers since the first round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament.
  • Towson attackman Alex Roussel posted a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists, and goaltender Matt Nilan tallied 15 saves to earn the win in net.
  • Roussel’s nine points are the most by a UVA opposing player since Duke’s Brennan O’Neill also had nine points on March 31, 2023.
  • Virginia was led Truitt Sunderland, who finished with three goals – to notch his 10th career hat trick – and an assist.
  • For the sixth consecutive game, McCabe Millon (1g, 4a) finished with at least five points.
  • UVA netminder Jake Marek (2-2) finished with 10 saves, including seven in the second half.

McCABE MILLON'S IMPRESSIVE START

  • Millon currently leads all Division I players in both points (6.33) and assists (3.83) per game.
  • He has notched at least five points in each game played so far this season.
  • Millon achieved career highs in both points (9) and assists (5) in UVA's season opener, a 19-14 win over Colgate (Feb. 8).

HOOS IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS

  • For games played through March 11, Virginia leads the nation in assists (10.67/gm).
  • The Cavaliers are also second in ground balls (39.33/gm), fourth in points (25.00/gm) and caused turnovers (11.67/gm), eighth in scoring offense (14.33/gm) and 12th in shooting percentage (.328).
  • UVA faceoff specialist and true freshman Griff Meyer is 12th in ground balls (7.00/gm), which also leads all freshmen nationally.
  • McCabe Millon's younger brother Brendan Millon is 20th among all Division I players in points (4.50/gm), also good for second among all freshmen nationally. The only other ACC players ahead of Brendan Millon in points per game are McCabe Millon, and USILA Preseason First Team All-Americans Joey Spallina (Syracuse) and Owen Duffy (North Carolina).

ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers host Utah (5-2) next Saturday (March 21) at Scott Stadium in a doubleheader alongside the UVA women's lacrosse team.
  • Opening faceoff for the men's game against the Utes is set for 11 a.m. on ACC Network Extra and WINA (98.9 FM/1070 AM).
  • The Virginia–Utah contest marks the first lacrosse game at Scott Stadium since the Cavaliers hosted Maryland during the 2011 regular season.
  • Following their 16-7 victory at Marquette this past Wednesday (March 11), the Utes are idle from competition for nine days before battling the Hoos at Scott Stadium.
  • Two days later (March 23), Virginia will host Dartmouth (4-2) at Klöckner Stadium at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
