Cavaliers Paced by Chang in Opening Round

PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. – Graduate student Paul Chang shot an opening round 70 (1-under) at the Pauma Valley Invitational on Monday (March 16). No. 2 Virginia shot a 3-over, 287 as a team and sit in a tie for 11th place after the first 18 holes.

Chang tallied five birdies on the on the day, tied for the sixth most of any player in the field. He has been the top Cavalier in the first round in three of UVA’s four tournaments this spring. Senior Ben James was one stroke behind him and shot an even par 71 in the first round. He went bogey free over his final 15 holes. James has produced 13-straight par or better rounds dating back to the Ben Hogan Collegiate in late September.

Junior Josh Duangmanee and sophomore Max Puregger each shot a 2-over, 73 to round out the UVA counting scores.

The Cavaliers are within five strokes of sixth place going into the second round. The Pauma Valley Invitational field is the most challenging of the spring for the Cavaliers with six teams in the top 10 and nine in the top 20 of the Scoreboard powered by Clippd rankings
