James Climbs on Day Two at Pauma Valley

by Scott Fitzgerald

PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. – Senior Ben James fired a 3-under, 68 in the second round of the Pauma Valley Invitational to move in a tie for 12th place on the individual leaderboard. The Cavaliers dropped to 12th in the team standings after a 1-over, 285.

James had only one blemish on his scorecard, a bogey on the par-3 12th hole, to go along with four birdies. Starting on No. 10, he birdied his first two holes and made the turn at 2-under. His three bogeys in 36 holes are tied for the fewest of any player in the field.

Graduate student Paul Chang matched his opening round score with another 1-under 70 that featured four birdies, all coming in his first eight holes. He is a stroke behind James and currently sits in a tie for 15th place.

Making his fourth start of the season, first year Michael Lee posted a 1-over 72 on Tuesday, his best round in team competition since an opening the spring with a 67 at the Puerto Rico Classic in February. Lee had four birdies on his card and was even par through his first nine holes.

Additional Notes

  • Chang and James are two of the 13 players in the 92-player field to be even par or better in each of the first two rounds of the tournament.
  • James is 4-under on the par 5s this week, tied for the third best of any player in the field.
