No. 13 Virginia Rallies For 2-1 Win Over Liberty

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A pitcher’s duel went the way of the home team on Wednesday (March 25) as No. 13 Virginia (28-3) put together a sixth-inning rally to defeat Liberty (14-16) by a score of 2-1 at Palmer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Liberty scored first, using a solo home run in the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead on the Cavaliers.

Virginia put together a rally in the sixth inning, using a walk of Bella Cabral and a single from Kelsey Hackett to put two runners on . Alex Call then dropped a single into left center that escaped the grasp of a diving left fielder, allowing Cabral to score from second while Call and Hackett moved to second and third, respectively.


Freshman Hannah Weismer put the Hoos on top with a sac fly to left that scored Hackett as Virginia grabbed the 2-1 victory.

Eden Bigham (10-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts across the final 1.2 innings. The Cavalier pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the night with starter Courtney Layne striking out five across the first 4.1 innings and Taylor Smith striking out two as she bridged the fifth and into the sixth.

Camden Anders (6-2) took the loss, allowing the two runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts in the complete-game outing.

NOTING THE HOOS

  • Virginia now leads the series with Liberty 51-32 and leads 30-12 in games played in Charlottesville.
  • With the win, the Cavaliers are now 5-0 this season in games decided by one run.
