No. 9 Cavaliers Fall to Boston College in Saturday Contest

Hoos run-ruled by Eagles

BRIGHTON, Mass. – On a frigid afternoon for baseball in New England, the No. 9 Virginia baseball team (21-7, 6-5 ACC) was run-ruled by the Boston College Eagles (20-8, 8-3 ACC) 17-0 at Brighton Baseball Field on Saturday (March 28).

Boston College jumped out of the gate with five runs in the first inning before plating seven more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

On a day when UVA left eight runners on base, Virginia’s three base hits belonged to Eric Becker, Harrison Didawick and Antonio Perrotta. Cavalier starter Max Stammel was dealt the loss after giving up nine runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Boston College’s offense opened the game by scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a two-run home run from Kyle Wolff.
  • The Eagles extended their lead to 6-0 in the second with a solo home run from Luke Gallo before tacking on another run an inning later on an RBI single.
  • Harrison Didawick recorded Virginia’s first hit of the day in the top of the fourth with a double to left center.
  • An RBI triple and another RBI base knock for the Eagles extended the Boston College advantage to 9-0 with four innings in the books.
  • In the fifth frame, Boston College scratched across seven runs on three hits, two hits and two hits by pitches in the frame to make it a 16-0 contest.
  • The Eagles’ final run of the game came an inning later when a bases-loaded walk was issued to Ty Mainolfi.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • Noah Murray extended his reached base streak to 16 games in the sixth inning when the junior reached on a throwing error by the Boston College shortstop.
  • Harrison Didawick and Sam Harris each reached base safely on Saturday to push their streaks to 15 games.

FROM HEAD COACH CHRIS POLLARD

“I am frustrated, I am disappointed and I am embarrassed. That is a long way away from the standard of excellence that we set for ourselves. I told our guys that the saying about pressure is that you are either applying pressure or you are receiving pressure. We have allowed them to get us on our heels, and we were not tough enough to punch back and get off our heels, back on our toes. We need to do a little bit of a gut check heading into tomorrow.”

UP NEXT

No. 9 Virginia will conclude its series with Boston College on Sunday. Massachusetts native John Paone will get the ball for UVA against the Eagles’ Brady Miller. Sunday’s finale is slated for 1 p.m. and will be carried on ACCNX and WINA (98.9 FM/1070 AM).
