No. 13 Virginia Sweeps Pitt Series With 4-1 Win Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 13 Virginia softball team (31-3, 9-2 ACC) swept the weekend series with Pitt (17-16, 4-8 ACC) with a 4-1 victory on Sunday (March 29) at Palmer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers pushed three runs home in the third inning when Bella Cabral delivered a bases-clearing double to left center. Virginia loaded the bases with an infield single from Jaiden Griffth before a throwing error allowed Kassidy Hudson to reach and Macee Eaton was walked to bring Cabral to the plate.

Pitt got a run back in the fourth with a sac fly to right field, but Virginia answered with a sac fly of its own in the fifth from Alex Call.

Courtney Layne (10-2) picked up the win, working 4.0 innings and allowing one run on one hit with a walk and five strikeouts. Eden Bigham picked up the save, her third, working the final 3.0 innings and allowing two hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Kyra Pittman (7-4) took the loss, allowing the four runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Only one of the four runs allowed was earned.

    FROM HEAD COACH JOANNA HARDIN
“I saw a lot of intent and clarity with what we were attacking at the plate and we made some great plays defensively, especially for leadoff outs to try to shut down their run game. They have a lot of speed and like to run to exploit defenses. Our pitching staff was phenomenal to keep us in all three games, but especially today. We got the big hit from Bella with a big hit in a big moment that we needed. Sweeps are really hard in conference play. We love playing at home, but we’re looking forward to getting on the road for our series at Duke and getting to work for the second half of conference play.”

    UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia returns to action next weekend when the Cavaliers travel to face No. 24 Duke in a three-game series. Play begins on Thursday (April 5) with first pitch at 6 p.m.
