Juan Irisarri Earns MASC Rookie of the Year Award

Juan Irisarri becomes the fourth recipient of the award as a member of UVA men’s squash.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s squash's Juan Irisarri has been named Men's Rookie of the Year in honors announced Monday (March 30) by the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference. Irisarri is the fourth recipient of the award as a member of the Virginia men’s squash program. He is the sixth-ever Cavalier to achieve the honor across the men’s and women’s programs.

Irisarri finished the season with an 11-5 record playing at the top of the ladder. He began the season with four straight wins and did not drop a game in his first three. In the Cavaliers' December matchup against Harvard, he defeated David Costales 3-0 to mark the first time in program history a UVA men’s squash player has won a match at position one against the Crimson. He later notched a pair of 3-0 wins against No. 19 Franklin & Marshall and No. 6 Drexel in Virginia's MASC Championship run.

Irisarri earned his first invitation to compete in the Pool Trophy, where he reached the round of 16. He also helped Virginia finish within the top eight of the final collegiate rankings for the sixth straight year.
