No. 10 Virginia Drops Series Finale to No. 7 Florida State On Saturday

Hoos close out homestand on Tuesday against JMU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In the series finale between two top 10 squads, the No. 10 Virginia baseball team (24-9, 8-7 ACC) fell on Saturday afternoon (April 4) at Disharoon Park to No. 7 Florida State (24-7, 9-3 ACC) by a score of 9-3.

The Seminoles scored a pair of runs in the second, third and fifth innings before plating three in the seventh to go up 9-0. Virginia was held scoreless for the opening seven frames prior to getting on the board with a trio of solo home runs over the final two frames.

UVA Starter John Paone was dealt the loss on Saturday after allowing four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. The Cavalier hitting trio of Kyle Johnson, Antonio Perrotta and Joe Tiroly each homered in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Following a scoreless opening inning, Florida State got on the board first by scoring in the top of the second with a two-run home run from Cal Fisher.
  • An inning later, the Seminoles tacked on two more to extend their lead to 4-0 with three innings in the books.
  • FSU pushed its lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI base knocks.
  • The visiting Seminoles led by as many as nine in the contest after plating a trio of runs in the top of the seventh.
  • Virginia finally got on the board in the eighth with the back-to-back home runs from Johnson and Perrotta. Johnson’s homer was smashed to dead center while Perrotta deposited his second home run of the weekend into the UVA bullpen beyond the right field wall.
  • Jayden Stroman tossed a scoreless top of the ninth before Tiroly homered to lead off the home half of the frame to make it a 9-3 final. Tiroly’s no-doubter to left field was the junior’s fourth long ball of the campaign.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • With the weekend series in the books, Florida State now leads the all-time series with Virginia, 64-35.
  • Kyle Johnson’s and Antiono Perrotta’s back-to-back home runs in the eighth were the fifth time this season that two Cavaliers have teamed up for back-to-back jacks.
  • Noah Murray’s 20-game reached base streak was snapped on Saturday with a 0-for-4 day.

FROM HEAD COACH CHRIS POLLARD

“I feel that we got away from our game plan. We came in with a clear game plan to take away the fastball. We had first and second, nobody out in the second inning in a 2-0 ballgame with a chance to get back in the ballgame and from there we allowed him to retire 17-straight. We just took a lot of fastballs during that stretch. We can’t let him get that deep into the game. When we got to their bullpen, we took some good swings and we just let Moore right there pitch off his fastball too much.”

UP NEXT
