Chang’s 65 Helps No. 2 Virginia Soar up Leaderboard

by Scott Fitzgerald

NAPLES, Fla. – Graduate student Paul Chang carded his best 18-hole score of his career and helped the Cavaliers climb to third place on Monday (April 6) at the Calusa Cup. As a team, the Cavaliers were 11-under (277) on moving day, a 17-shot improvement Monday’s round one score.

Chang went bogey free in round two and moved into a tie for second place. The 65 was the lowest in the field through two rounds at the Calusa Cup and matches Josh Duangmanee (2x) and Maxi Puregger for the lowest round by a Cavalier this season. Chang was six-under on this final six holes, which included an eagle on the par 4, 14th hole.

Chang trails Florida’s Jack Turner by three strokes on the individual leaderboard going into the final round. The Gators have a 10-shot advantage over second-place USF in the team competition and are up 14 shots on Virginia with 18 holes to play.

Freshman Michael Lee was in the 60s for the sixth time this season after he posted a 3-under 69. He also had an eagle on his scorecard with a three on the 545-yard, par 5, sixth hole. It was one of three eagles on the hole by the field on Monday. Michael Lee is alone in 16th place and looking for his fourth top 20 of the season.

Senior Bryan Lee shot a 2-under, 70 and is in a tie for sixth place after 36 holes. He has only two bogeys in the first two rounds, tied for the fewest of any player in the field.

Josh Duangmanee and Alex Wells were each 1-over on their Monday rounds, turning in 73s to round out the Cavalier counting scores.

The final round of the Calusa Cup is slated for an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday morning. Alex Wells will be the first Cavalier to go off on Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. tee time.
