Joshua Miller joined the Virginia staff in 2018 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. In 2024, he was promoted to the Assistant Athletics Director for Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning, supervising a staff of seven assistant strength coaches that cover all sports except for football and basketball.
At UVA, he has worked directly with the swimming and diving, field hockey and men's lacrosse teams, designing annual training programs for those sports and coaching proper conditioning and strength-training techniques as well as supervising the student-athletes' time in the weight room.
In just his second season with the Cavaliers, he saw the field hockey team make its first trip to the NCAA Semifinals in almost a decade. The team made another trip to the NCAA Semifinals in 2019, his final season with the team.
Miller began working with the swimming and diving teams in the 2020-21 season, the first year of six consecutive NCAA team titles for the women's team. In his time as their strength coach, his swimmers have won 59 NCAA individual and relay titles, accumulated 193 All-American honors, and won 87 ACC individual and relay titles.
In addition to their countless NCAA and American records, the swimmers have set 27 world records in Miller's time working with the team.
Miller began working with the men's lacrosse team in 2026, with the team winning the ACC Championship in his first season with the squad.
Before coming to Virginia, Miller spent five years at William and Mary while working towards his master's degree in business administration. He worked for the football and Olympic sports programs developing weight training, conditioning, and speed development programs.
Miller served as the head performance coach for Tidewater Performance from 2012 to 2013, both acting as a trainer and implementing a new facility workflow and business plan for a new location.
Miller graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 2010. He then returned and completed his master's in performance enhancement and injury prevention in 2011. During his undergraduate studies, Miller played on the baseball team.
Miller and his wife, Megan, reside in Charlottesville with their children Greer and Jackson.
