TitleAssistant Coach
Juan Ramirez

Juan Ramirez joined head coach Sara O’Leary’s staff in October 2025.

Ramirez arrived at UVA with a wealth of experience coaching at a high level. Most recently, he worked at the Piatti Tennis Center in Italy with the professional group program, traveling to Futures, Challengers and Junior Grand Slam tournaments with various groups of players. His work included coaching former world junior No. 1 and 2022 Junior French Open champion Gabriel Debru.

Prior to that, Ramirez spent three years working with UVA men’s tennis alumnus and three-time national champion Alexander Ritschard, helping him rise to No. 145 in the ATP rankings and win his first two Challenger titles, the most recent coming in Savannah, Georgia, in 2024.

Ramirez has coached at all four Grand Slam events. He helped Ritschard achieve the best results of his career, including qualifying for the main draws at Wimbledon and the US Open, where he faced ATP No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas and ATP No. 6 Félix Auger-Aliassime. Ritschard also reached the final round of qualifying draw at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

During that time, Ramirez coached Ritschard to victories over current and former Top 100 players, including Fernando Verdasco, Jiri Lehecka, Valentin Vacherot, Tennys Sandgren, Jiri Vesely, Michael Mmoh, Joao Sousa, Henry Laaksonen, Thiago Tirante, Fabian Marozsan, Pablo Andujar, Damir Dzumhur and Ricardas Berankis, among others.

Under Ramirez' supervision, Ritschard entered the Switzerland Davis Cup Team, where he helped the team qualify into the World Group Stage in 2023.

Ramirez also spent five years as a Head Tennis Professional in Dubai, working at the seven-star Burj Al Arab and five-star resorts Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Al Qasr Hotel and Park Hyatt Dubai.

As a player, Ramirez competed at the University of Minnesota, helping the team reach a program-high No. 16 in the ITA rankings. He was named the team’s Most Improved Player during his senior season. He later served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Golden Gophers, helping the program capture its first Big Ten Conference title in 20 years.

Ramirez graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with a focus on professional and strategic communications.
