The win is Virginia’s first bowl win since a 34-27 win over Georgia in the1995 Peach Bowl.
The win over West Virginia is Virginia’s ninth win of the season. It isUVa’s first 9-win season since 1998 (9-3).
Freshman TB Wali Lundy won the Jerry Richardson Most Valuable Player Award ofthe inaugural Continental Tire Bowl.
Lundy rushed for 127 yards to tie his career high set previously againstVirginia Tech in UVa’s most recent game.
Lundy finished the season with 826 yards rushing, a UVa record for afreshman. Antonio Rice held the previous record with 764 yards in 1982.
Lundy also caught five passes to finish the season with 58 receptions. Thatties the ACC record for most receptions by a freshman with Maryland’s FrankWycheck in 1990.
Lundy’s 4 TDs is a UVa bowl record and a UVA modern day (since 1937) recordfor most TDs by a freshman.
Lundy led UVa in both rushing (127 yds., 2 TD) and receiving (5 for 76 yds, 2TD). Overall he finished with 239 all-purpose yards in the game, which is aUVA freshman record.
All-purpose player Marques Hagans‘ 69-yard punt return for a TD is UVa’sfirst since Tiki Barber took one back 74 yards vs. N.C. State in 1996. It isalso UVa’s first punt return TD in a bowl.
Hagans’ 14-yard TD pass to Lundy in the first quarter was his first of theseason. He became the fifth different Cavalier to throw a TD pass this season.
UVa defeated 4 ranked teams this season to become the only ACC school otherthan Florida State to beat as many in a season. FSU beat 6 ranked teams in1993 and has defeated 5 on several occasions.
Half (13 of 26) of the games Al Groh has coached at Virginia have beenagainst ranked teams.
LB Angelo Crowell needed 4 tackles to break his own single-season tacklerecord. He was credited with at least 12 tackles (we’ll look at the tape forthe official total), but he still set a school record regardless.
WR Billy McMullen suffered a dislocated left elbow on his only catch of thegame on UVa’s first possession and missed the remainder of the contest. Hefinished his career with 210 receptions, second in ACC history.
Junior WR Ryan Sawyer picked up the slack in McMullen’s absence and finishedwith 4 catches for 41 yards. All 4 of his catches went for first downs.
UVa punted only once, following its first possession of the game. From there,UVa scored on 8 consecutive possessions before running out the final 46seconds of the game on the final possession.
Virginia started 6 true freshmen (3 offense, 3 defense) and 3 redshirtfreshmen (2 offense, 1 defense). The starting offensive line featured truefreshmen at the tackles (LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson and RT Brad Butler) and aredshirt freshman, LG Brian Barthelmes. In addition, starting TE Heath Milleris a redshirt freshman.
