Coaches’ Comments

Virginia Head Coach Pete Gillen:

“We were desperate for a victory after losing three in a row. I though ourdefense was good. We beat a very good team. Jason Clark did a good job makingJosh Howard work. Majestic Mapp gave us a lift. Everybody who playedcontributed. … It was a must win.”

Nick Vander Laan was great, doing the dirty work on the boards. We did arespectable job against the top rebounding team in the country.”

Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser:

“Virginia played very well. We knew they would be a wounded animal. We foughthard, but we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

(On Virginia’s defensive strategy)
“We prepared for both [zone and man-to-man defense]. We didn’t play wellagainst both. We didn’t handle the basketball as well as we needed to. …[In the second half], their pressure pushed us away from the basket and wedidn’t really counter that.”

“We haven’t shot well all year. They guarded us better than we executed onoffense. We’re a shooter shy without Justin Gray in there.”

(On Wake’s play during a first-half Virginia run)
“We had a couple of good looks that didn’t go down and they hit some shots. We didn’t pay enough attention to detail during that stretch.

(On calling two timeouts early in the second half)
“We’ve got some youngsters out there. We didn’t want it to slip away rightthere. … We’re a team that is still learning how to play in thosesituations.”

The ACC “is a balanced league. The home-court edge has manifested itself sofar. But it is too early to say it is a trend.”
