POST-GAME QUOTES

VIRGINIA COACH Pete Gillen

“We played with great heart and toughness tonight. A symbol of the game was Jason Clark. He got hurt the other night and had to play tonight with his right eye closed. He played very hard and made some great hustle plays. That gave the rest of our guys some courage and determination.”

“Our defense was good tonight. They have some great players, so that’s why we went zone. We were worried about trying to match up with them man to man. … We were worried about Stoudamire shooting over us, but our guys talked and did a good job finding open shooters.”

“Both our point guards pass the ball. When you have guys that pass it, that makes it more fun to play. Our point guard play was good tonight, and that helps everything.”

(on Singletary) “He was excited, playing against Arizona and playing against Mustafa (Shakur).”

“Our rebounding was good. They got 12 offensive rebounds, which we were really worried about. Twelve is a little too many, but we did a decent job.”

ARIZONA COACH LUTE OLSON

“It doesn’t take a lot of looking to see what happened here tonight. Virginia outplayed us in every aspect of the game. They had 46 points in the paint, 27 points off our turnovers and 13 second chance points. The Virginia guards were solid tonight.”

“We had 11 turnovers off our two starting guards and anytime you do that, it’s going to kill you. “

“I like Pete Gillen’s team. He has good size in the front and good experience. Great quickness out of either of those point guards; they have quick hands. Any time we penetrated, they came out with the ball.”

“The combination of things that Virginia has is very impressive. J.R. Reynolds normally shoots the ball better than he did today, but he’s a great outside shooter. The big guys are loading inside and Devin Smith does a lot of things well. I think Virginia fans should be excited about the prospect of their team.”

“As for us, we need to get back to the drawing board and get people to take care of the ball. We made some bad decisions tonight. We wish we could have come in and played more like we are capable of playing.”

Sean Singletary is quick, smart and shoots well. He showed a lot of poise tonight. We didn’t know much about him, as he’s a freshman. The only film we saw was from last year’s ACC Tournament, so we knew about the returnees.”
