Tonight’s Virginia victory marks the 13th consecutive time the Cavaliers have defeated the Tar Heels at home. The 13-game win streak is UVa’s longest home win streak ever over an ACC team and the third longest against any opponent. North Carolina’s last win at Scott Stadium came in 1981.
Jameel Sewell’s 18-yard TD run in the third quarter was the first score by a Cavalier QB against the Tar Heels in two years, since a 56-24 UVa win in 2004. Last year the Tar Heels won at home 7-5.
The last time Virginia posted two shutouts in the same year was 2004 (51-0 vs. Akron and 16-0 vs. Maryland). The Cavaliers last shut out two ACC opponents during the 1990 season when UVa defeated Duke, 59-0, and NC State, 31-0.
This is the first time Virginia has shut out North Carolina since a 3-0 win in 1926.
UVa quarterback Jameel Sewell moved into first place on several Cavalier freshman record lists and improved his status on several others:

UVa running back Jason Snelling ran for a career-high 131 yards on 19 carries. He surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark tonight for the second time this season. He had 103 yards in the Cavaliers’ loss at East Carolina. Over the last four games, Snelling has rushed for 407 yards this season. His previous career was 123 yards vs. Temple last season (33 carries).
Chris Cook’s interception in the fourth quarter was the second in his UVa career. He becomes the fourth UVa player to record an interception this year.
UVa kicker Chris Gould’s 31-yard field goal in the first quarter made him 7-7 inside the 40 this year.
UVa redshirt freshman quarterback Jameel Sewell celebrated his 19th birthday today.
Cavalier punter Ryan Weigand’s punt in the first quarter was just his second punt of the season, and his UVa career. He finished the game with five punt attempts averaging 43.2 yards. He had a long of 52 yards.
Virginia’s Chris Cook forced fumble in the first quarter was the first of his career.
UVa sophomore linebacker Antonio Appleby picked up his first career sack in today’s game.
UVa tailback Cedric Peerman’s 19-yard run in the second quarter was the longest rush in his career.
UVa wide receiver Fontel Mines extended his consecutive streak of catching a pass to 19 games today. That is the longest streak of any current UVa player.
Today’s game marks the fourth time this season the Cavaliers held an opponent without a touchdown in the first half and it marks the third time this year they have held the opponent scoreless (also Duke & Maryland).Wyoming scored just three points in the first half in its game at Scott Stadium.
UVa defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald recorded his sixth sack of the season tonight, tying him for third place on the UVa’s Sack List for Freshmen.
Darryl Blackstock (2002) tops the list with 10, while Sean Scott (1984) had 8. Stuart Anderson (1978) is tied with Fitzgerald with six.
In the series since 1996, Virginia has scored 21 times on the ground while UNC has scored just five rushing touchdowns with two coming in 1997. In the last 10 meetings, UNC’s offense has scored just 18 touchdowns, with nine coming in two games (1997, 2002).
Virginia is 12-2-1 since 1982 when committing fewer turnovers in the series. UNC committed three turnovers while Virginia did not commit any turnovers.
Virginia outrushed UNC, 194-98, and outgained the Tar Heels, 370-182, making it the 52nd time in 64 meetings that winner has outrushed the loser in the series. It was the 54th time that winning team outgained the losing team.
UVa held North Carolina to 94 rushing yards, marking the second time this season that Cavaliers held an opponent under 100 yards rushing (-21 at Duke).
This was the third time this season that Virginia has held an opponent under 200 yards of total offense. UNC gained 182 yards of total offense. Western Michigan finished with 179 yards and Duke had 100 yards against the Cavaliers.
North Carolina held Virginia without a touchdown in the first half. It is the first time the Tar Heels have not allowed a touchdown in a half since last season’s Virginia game, a 7-5 UNC victory. Carolina held Virginia to a field goal and a safety in that game.
