ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Making their professional debut on the USTA Futures Circuit, a pair of former Cavaliers swept the titles at the Futures of Rochester this week at the Tennis Club of Rochester. Somdev Devvarman won the singles title and Devvarman and Treat Huey won the doubles title at the tournament.
Devvarman, the No. 8 seed, won all five of his matches in straight sets. He didn’t drop a game in the first two rounds, posting 6-0, 6-0 wins over Adolfo Gomez-Pinter of Spain in the first round and Ohio State All-American Justin Kronauge in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Devvarman topped top-seeded Artem Sitak of Russia (ranked No. 321 in the world) 6-2, 6-2. After defeating another All-American from Ohio State, Bryan Koniecko, in the semfiinals, 7-5, 6-3, he defeated Alexander Domijan 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
It was Devvarman’s second futures win of the year. In January he won the futures event in Tampa, Fla.
Devvarman and Huey won their second futures doubles title of the year, having won in Tampa as well. This week, they opened the tournament by topping the No. 1 seeds Marcus Fugate and Nathan Healey 6-4, 6-2. In the quartefinals, they defeated Greg Ouellette and Rhyne Williams 6-1, 6-4. After downing a pair of Florida State players, Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals, they downed the Ohio State pair of Koniecko and Kronauge 6-1, 4-6, 12-10 in the final.
Both players will continue play next week at the futures event in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Devvarman and Huey weren’t the only former Cavaliers to win a professional title this past week. Rylan Rizza teamed with recent USC graduate Kaes Van’t Hof to win the doubles title at the futures event in Shingle Springs, Calif.
