Virginia Head Coach Joanne Boyle

“I’m really proud of my team, coming off the Carolina game and really responding. They knew that this could be a signature win for us. I thought they did a really great job of taking care of the ball, executing, and playing great defense.”

On how the game compared to the two teams’ last meeting:
“I told them, `we’ve been here before, what are you going to do, what do you want to be as a team?’ They went out and they really did a great job. We were just a different team, which I thought two things signified it: One, China made a great call for Kelsey on a quick hitter, just to get to the rim, and then I think Frankie [Ataira Franklin] hit the free throw line. Those were times when a year ago, or even a couple of weeks ago, we would have hung our heads, and we didn’t. Playing that last five minutes the way we did, I was really proud of them.”

On Virginia’s shooting game:
“I love it when I look down and I see four of our players in double figures, because there’s a lot of balance. I thought Frankie [Ataira Franklin] had a really good shooting night, and Kelsey [Wolfe]. In different parts of the game, different people were stepping up. The first half felt like everything was going in.”

On the consistency of the offense:
“I love how we are shooting jump shots, but that’s not always going to happen. I think the girls are getting in the gym, getting their shots up and feeling more comfortable. As a team, when they are feeling good about where they are and they trust each other out there, I think their shots fall down a lot easier.”On the upcoming Boston College game:

Junior Guard Ataira Franklin

On the game being a “must-win”:
“For what we said we are trying to do this year, we can’t afford to go 0-2 against any team. I think we took that Carolina game to heart, and then we let it go and came out trying to be that team we were the three games before that.”

Senior Forward Telia McCall

On the game being a “must-win”:
“We knew this was going to be a very important game. We had to come out, in the first five minutes of the game, pressing the gas pedal and just going. We knew that they were going to try to push forward, and we stopped them. I was proud of my team.”

Miami Head Coach Katie Meier

“Virginia played great. I thought they came out really sharp. They did a couple of things on offense that were different from their last game. They saw matchups that they could exploit and totally exploited them. I thought that they covered up our leading scorers pretty well in that zone, and shifted well to them. It was a great job by the team and their staff. We did everything that we could to cut their lead to five, and then just really gave up some dumb, lag-effort plays. It’s not that the ball didn’t bounce our way: Virginia went and got the ball and Miami was too tired to go get it. I think we used up all of our tank to cut that lead and ended up giving up easy points allowing them to bring their lead back to double digits.”

On the takeaways from today’s game:
“We have more parts that are coming along. I thought that the play of Keyona Hayes and Shanel Williams was really surprising and very good for us. We’ll be alright, and I think Virginia and Miami are going to be two teams clawing it out in Greensboro.”
