Virginia Head Coach Joanne Boyle
“I’m excited about the win, I think we are putting a good stretch together. I thought our prep was good and the girls came out really focused. They didn’t take anybody lightly.”
On Ataira Franklin:
“We ask her to be a leader, we ask her to be a threat on offense, we ask her to defend their best player – we ask a lot of her. Especially in the past few games, you can really see her offense coming. She’s been struggling early because of her knee, but it’s nice to see it healing and feeling better so that she’s back in her own rhythm. It’s nice for her to get [1,000 points] at home.”

On reaching 1,000 points:
“It was great to get it at home. It’s exciting and overwhelming, especially in the game. Afterwards, it feels great to be a part of the history of the university and be able to contribute. On top of that, it’s great to win.”
On man-to-man defense:
“Our game plan was to stay up and defend the threes. We had hard switches on everything, we were switching one through five, and that’s not something we typically do. I think it worked pretty well for us.”

On the upcoming road game at Wake Forest:
“Wake has been playing really well lately. It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but so is every ACC game. It’s going to be the same preparation we always have, and we have to carry this momentum from the past couple wins with us.”
Boston College Head Coach Erik Johnson
On the game:
“Virginia is good. I thought that they had us scouted well; Coach Boyle and their staff do a great job. They’re tough, they’re physical inside, and that gave us problems. It gave us problems on the board and they were able to score inside. On top of that, their guards shot the ball well. We’re a very good shooting team, but tonight we shot 29%. It’s going to be awfully tough for us to win a game when we shoot 29%. You have to credit Virginia. They came out, were tough on our shooters, and we had to rush a little bit. Once we finally settled down and realized that they’re flying at our shooters and we can lift-fake and get to the line, it got better. Our kids did a great job of getting to the line, they didn’t quit, and they continued to fight. It’s hard to find other ways to score when you’re not shooting well, but we did and we made it a game coming down the stretch. I’m proud of our kids, but Virginia was clearly the better team tonight.”
On adjustments moving forward:
“We’ve got to be able to improve our knowledge of how to score within our offense as teams get to know us better. The good news is that people are preparing for us because we’re a good basketball team. They’re ready: switching these screens, hedging other options. So now the next step is to know ways to react to that and do something different rather than running the same things. That’s the next step, and the maturation of a basketball team with a new coach. Now we’re learning that if they play us one way, then we can score another way. So they’re getting it, but they need to do it more consistently. I think tonight was a good example of that. When they did creative things we were able to score, but when we were rote and robotic Virginia had us scouted and did a great job.”
