Head Coach Steve Swanson

Opening statement:
“My first statement, I just want to congratulate UCLA. They were everything I thought they would be, they played with a lot of heart. It was a tough game to lose, obviously, for us, but full credit to UCLA. I thought they played very well and they’re just a good team – solid in every position. I thought their back line played very well. The other thing I’d like to say is thanks to Cary (North Carolina), and thanks to all the people here. What an environment it was. It was great to play in such a great venue and in front of so many fans. It was an incredible atmosphere out there, and we appreciate that very much.”

On what UCLA did to make things difficult:
“They have good athletes at every position. They’re organized. They’re good in the air. They’re good with the ball at their feet, so there’s not a lot of weaknesses on that team. It was a different game than the last three games, we knew that was going to be the case, but I thought our team did extremely well. We were in a position right where we wanted to be at the end there, and give them credit, they came back and got a goal and pulled it out in PKs. But if we play this game 10 times, it’s probably going to be like that every time.”

Morgan Brian, Midfield, Junior

On her penalty kick:
“It’s PKs, it’s a hard situation for anyone at that point, but I thought Jessie (Ferrari) did great to save one of them. We’ve been practicing them all year, and we make them in practice. Then you step up there and it’s the national semifinal. I think (Katelyn Rowland) made a good save. It is a lot of pressure but at the end, obviously, I’d like to have it back, but it’s just one of those things you can’t.”

Morgan Stearns, Goalkeeper, Freshman

On UCLA’s goal:
“(Ally Courtnall) sort of came out of a blind spot because the ball had kind of been right there in front of my vision for a while, so I was really tuned into it. Then they slid it across and all of a sudden she’s kind of right there and placed it into a tough spot. We had pressure on it, but she finished it well. Obviously, I would’ve liked to have saved it, but unfortunately, couldn’t get there.”

Makenzy Doniak, Forward, Sophomore

On whether this season was a success despite the end result:
“In the locker room, we were talking about it – this team is all in. We lost today. We didn’t get the result we wanted, but this season has been more than any of us could’ve imagined. We’re so close as a team, and this loss does not make our season a failure at all, by any means. For the seniors, we wanted to win it for them, but they will go on to do great things. I think our chemistry as a team has really grown this year. We were definitely successful.”
