EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Virginia cross country teams captured both the men’s and women’s titles Friday at the 2014 Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. It marked the second-time in the six-year history of the event that the Cavaliers swept both championships (2011).
Sophomore Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the women’s race for her first collegiate victory, while junior Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) led the Cavalier men with a third place finish.
The 10th-ranked Virginia women won the meet with 37 points, having six of the top 16 finishers. No. 26 William & Mary was second with 74 points, followed by Wake Forest (94) and Arizona (95).
Fakler won the women’s race in a time of 20:39.0, becoming the first Cavalier woman to win the individual title at the meet. Graduate student transfers Iona Lake (Norwich, England) and Morgan Kelly (San Francisco, Calif.) placed fourth and eighth, respectively, in their Virginia debuts. Sophomore Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished ninth, while junior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ont.) edged teammate Laura Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y.) for 15th place to round out the scoring five for the Cavaliers.
“I thought it was a good start to the season,” said women’s head coach Todd Morgan. “I am a really happy with the performance on a day that was a lot warmer and more humid than it has been recently. Regardless of the conditions, you just have to compete and win the head-to-head matchups and we won a lot of those today. It was great to see Sarah Fakler get her first collegiate win, and the first individual title for our team at this event.”
The 13th-ranked Cavalier men won a close three-team battle with a score of 47 points, edging Furman (51) and No. 12 Iona (54).
King crossed in a time of 23:58.5 to finish third and lead a group of four Cavaliers who finished in the top 10. Junior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) was seventh, followed by sophomores Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.) in eighth and Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va.) in 10th. Freshman Trevor Hopper (Ridgefield, Conn.) rounded out the scoring five with a 19th place finish.
“The biggest thing for our team today is we are learning to win,” said men’s head coach Pete Watson. “In previous years, we probably would have come up two or three points on the other end and finished third. The guys got it done with a big win to start the season, especially defeating two very quality squads in Furman and Iona.”
The Cavalier men return to action next week at the Washington Invitational in Seattle. The women will compete next on Oct. 17 at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The teams will run once more at Panorama Farms on Oct. 31 as Virginia hosts the ACC Championships.
