Cavaliers Place 21st at NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Virginia men’s cross country team finished 21st at the 2014 NCAA Cross Championships Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.

Virginia, the NCAA Southeast Regional champions, scored 502 points to finish 21st. Colorado won its second consecutive team championship with 65 points.

Three Cavaliers earned top-100 individual finishes to lead the squad. Junior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) crossed in 81st place, followed by sophomore Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.) in 84th place and junior Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) in 88th place. Sophomore Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va.) was 164th and first-year Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) was 174th to round out the scoring five for Virginia.

“Obviously, this wasn’t the result we were hoping for or expecting,” said men’s head coach Pete Watson. “It was a slow pace early on and we didn’t get in position early. Our top three were solid, but we struggled on the back end and that hurt us in the team score.”
