CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team fell to Delaware State, 15-3 in six innings, Friday afternoon (March 20) as part of a round-robin tournament at The Park.
The Hornets (3-13) took advantage of eight errors by the Cavaliers (5-24), who scored two runs in the second on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and a bases-loaded walk by sophomore McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.).
Virginia also scored in the fifth inning on a solo home run by freshman Lauren Heintzelman (Southlake, Texas), her first home run in a Cavalier uniform.
Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) took the loss (4-13), allowing only two earned runs (15 total) in six innings of work with five strikeouts. Tara Tursellino (3-10) earned the win, allowing three runs in six innings with four strikeouts.
The tournament continues Saturday with the two teams facing each other again at 2:30 p.m. before the Cavaliers take on Marist at 5 p.m. Delaware State plays the Red Foxes at noon.
