Cavaliers Fall at North Carolina, 12-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–The Virginia softball team fell at North Carolina, 12-4 in five innings, Sunday afternoon (March 29) at Anderson Stadium.
The Cavaliers (7-28, 1-11 ACC) struck quickly in the first inning when freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) led off the game with a double and was driven home on a single by sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.). UVa doubled its lead on a triple down the right-field line by sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.).
After freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched her way out of a bases-loaded 1-out jam in the first, sophomore McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) launched a home run over the scoreboard in left-center field to lead off the second inning, her third home run of the season.
The Tar Heels (23-9, 9-2 ACC) cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, but Virginia pushed the lead to two at 4-2 in the third when senior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored on a North Carolina throwing error.
UNC broke open the game in the bottom of the third, scoring seven.
Formby took the loss to fall to 5-15 on the season, while Sydney Matzko (8-4) picked up the win for UNC, allowing an unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief.
Next up, the Cavaliers begin a 12-game home stand with a doubleheader against Western Carolina on March 31. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
