Recap | Box Score

Head Coach Joanne Boyle

Opening Statement:
“I’m just happy to get a home win. We have been working on some thing the last two days, and I saw success in that, so I know the girls got some confidence there. Our press did a good job and we moved the ball better offensively. Other than that last three or four minutes of the game I thought the girls did a really great job.”

On Virginia offense:
“It was great for the guards to get their confidence going. We shot the ball really well. Faith [Randolph] made a great shot at the end of the half. Then after halftime, I felt as thought it loosened up a bit and Sarah [Imovbioh] got a couple of and-ones for us. We tried to put her in a different situation, different position in the second half to get her a touch. The more we go inside-outside game the better I think our offense will be.”

On Virginia shooting:
“You never know if you will shoot the ball that well, so we did not want to come out of the half saying that is just what we are going to do. We had to go inside to Sarah [Imovbioh] and Lauren [Moses], and when Sarah [Imovbioh] got a couple of touches and got on the glass it kind of of loosened things up and we played more freely. We moved the ball better tonight, too.”

On Sarah Beth Barnette:
“You never know when your number is going to be called. She played significant minutes for us and did a really good job. You never know when you will need someone. She was ready tonight, she was focused, and she came out and did a really nice job for us.”

On Virginia’s defense inside:
“We talk about guarding the ball and it’s a weakness of ours. Some people can guard it, but not everybody. Boston College has such good ball movement. We gave up too many off-the-bounce scores, but it was significant that we were able to take away their threes. We preach it, we work on it and we have to be able to guard the ball. We are just going to keep working on it.”

On upcoming game against Louisville:
“We were focused on this game, but Louisville is a great team. They are top ten in the nation. They are a team that will draw ten or eleven thousand people. They will play very physically and press. They will throw the kitchen sink at you between pressing, some man-to-man, and zone. They are an athletic and hard-nosed team. We are going to have to go into an environment and match that intensity. It’s going to be very loud so the team will have to take on a lot of game management on their own because they won’t be able to hear some things. I think toughness and poise in that game will be imperative. Being able to break a press, flow into our game, and getting stops will be very important.

On playing at home:
“You have to protect your home floor. Two things we always say: protect your home floor and be road warriors. I think we have done a fairly good job at home, not perfect, but we are learning more and more what it means to protect your home floor and how to do that. We have really have to emphasize and get better at being road warriors. Having a grind to us for 40 minutes, guarding people, and taking care of the ball are huge to execute on the road.”

Junior guard Faith Randolph

On Boston College’s zone defense:
“It doesn’t matter to me. You can play man or you can play zone (against us). We are just going to attack and be aggressive.”

On Boston College defense:
“We were just working on trying to attack the zone and kick out for open shots. They were really guarding us on the three point line so the coaches were saying when you feel it be confident in your shot and just shoot it.”

Sophomore Guard Breyana Mason

On Boston College’s defense:
“We were trying to move the ball around, but through all that swinging the ball we need to be able to attack the gap. I think because they took away the inside they caught us off guard at first, but I think as the game went on we did a better job.”

On what they learned from the loss last week on the road at Syracuse:
“Our shots weren’t falling like they normally do against Syracuse. I think our execution offensively was off. Even if the shots aren’t falling we need to get that offensive movement. Defensively we could have done better as well. We need to stick together when it’s getting a little tough. Grind it out and do what we need to do to win the game, especially on the road. We have to be tougher.”
