Opening Statement
“Jeff has a great team. It was a great crowd. I thought our team came out strong, trading a lot of buckets there early. They are a veteran team. Somewhere between the 10 and eight minute mark, we had some key turnovers that gave them some easy transition. We lost it a little bit. For most of the game, I was proud of my team for the effort. We are a young team, but we were not scared or intimidated. Cleaning up ball screen defense and taking away those turnovers there, it could have been a different game, but that is on us.”
On some frustrations
“There were some times we just didn’t execute. Things were coming easier to Faith. But the team had to work through some things. We got a little complacent. One end of the floor really affects the other. We had a little bit of a letdown when they had those easy buckets in transition. We just lost it a little bit. But I am proud of the team. We just need to regroup. Conference doesn’t get any easier. This is a great prep game for Miami. Miami is a very athletic team. We need to clean up some of the things from this game.”
Points in the paint, we really, really got hurt on that, especially second-chance points in the first half. Our ball screen defense was really lax tonight. I think that really hurt us.
On Virginia’s three-point shooting
“We tried to go more inside because they are such a good transition team. We were trying to get ourselves going. Trying to get points in the paint. We didn’t get to the free throw line much. I don’t think it was a matter of not shooting threes, I think it was us trying to attack the rim and get to the line. They did stay tight to our shooters. We didn’t finish some and had a couple of shots blocked. Jeff watched film and his game plan was definitely to make us finish. At times we did. At times we did not. But what a great learning-lesson to come down to this great environment.
Junior guard Faith Randolph
“There were crucial points when we had them on their heels and we needed to get defensive stops, but we just couldn’t today. I think we are going to grow from this game. Just like the Syracuse game, we are going to learn from it. We need to get better defensively. Offense will take care of itself. If we keep getting better each and every day, we will be good.”
On what Louisville was doing to frustrate the team
“They were face-guarding me a little bit. Having more help toward my side. That’s when I need to focus on finding the open man and getting them the ball. The other guards need to be aggressive because the emphasis is on me, they are going to get open shots.”
