Game 1
Towson 10, Virginia 2 (6 Innings)
Towson used five home runs as part of a 12 hit performance to pick up the win in game one of the afternoon doubleheader.
Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) took the loss in the first game of the afternoon, falling to 5-9 on the season. She allowed six runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Towson struck first, getting on the board in the second inning with a two-out single from Bailey Boyd. Nicole Stockinger reached on a single up the middle and stole second before Boyd would deliver the two-out single back up the middle for the run.
Virginia struck back in the third, using a single from Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and a fielding error to put runners at the corners with one out. Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) then delivered an RBI groundout to third to get Chapdelaine home and tie the score 1-1.
The Tigers took advantage of another error in the third inning to put a runner in scoring position before an RBI single to right field would put Towson back on top. A two-run shot from Shelby Stracher then put the lead at 4-1 for the home team.
Towson added to the lead with an RBI single from Olivia Yarbrough that brought home Kendyl Scott. Scott reached on a single, stole second and then took third on a wild pitch prior to the Yarbrough hit. A double to right put two more in scoring position before a sac fly gave the Tigers the 6-1 lead.
With two runners on base in the top of the fifth, Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) delivered an RBI single with one out. The Cavaliers got nothing else in the inning, but cut the lead to 6-2.
Towson got two home runs in the first three batters of the fifth to push the lead out to six runs at 8-2.
Game 2
Towson 6, Virginia 3
Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) took the loss in the second game, falling to 1-3 on the season. She pitched a gem through four innings, but the Tigers were able to get to her in the fifth as she allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Smith did not allow a hit until the fifth.
Towson broke through in the home half of the fifth with a solo home run from Boyd. Three straight batters then reached base, forcing the Cavaliers to call in Osherow from the bullpen with no outs. A wild pitch brought another run home and moved two into scoring position.
A walk loaded the bases again before Towson would come up with a two-run double that took the lead out to 4-0 in favor of the Tigers. A sac fly brought a fifth run home before the Cavaliers would get out of the inning.
Virginia got back in the game in the top of the sixth when Miller hit a three-run home run to cut the Towson lead to 5-3.
Towson got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when a fielding error with two outs allowed the runner at third to score. Virginia trailed 6-3 heading into the final frame.
