Hoos Hold Lead After 36 Holes at Carpet Capital Collegiate

After shooting 12-under 276 to open the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga., the UVA men’s golf team almost duplicated that score during the second round of play. The Cavaliers shot 11-under 277 on Saturday and hold a three-shot lead over Auburn heading into Sunday’s final 18 holes of play at 23-under 553.
Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) both posted second-round scores of 5-under 67 to lead UVA. They are tied for fourth place at 7-under 137. Sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) is two shots behind them on the leaderboard in seventh place. He shot 3-under 69 on Saturday.
Bard’s round featured nine birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Schaap started his day with a bogey and then piled up seven birdies and one more bogey during his round.
Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), UVA’s first-round leader, dropped back to 16th place after shooting 2-over 74. Junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is in 37th place at 3-over 147.
