William & Mary Quotes
William & Mary Head Coach Brian Murphy
Opening Statement:
“Like we have for a while, we fought hard and I’m really pleased with how we competed in all aspects. We played good defense. We got a good start out of Bodie (Sheehan). Our bullpen guys pitched out of some jams and we got some big at bats. We’re thrilled to get the chance to keep playing.”
On the win and having another game to play shortly
“I don’t have a ton of time to give you perspective. This game happened. It was a great win for us. We’ll be able to better reflect upon it later.”
On surviving elimination games the last few weeks
“We’ve played good baseball and that’s a big part of it the last little bit. We’re thrilled with the way they’re fighting and competing, we don’t seem phased by it or things out of their control.”
RHP Bodie Sheehan
On snapping the losing streak to Virginia
“It’s huge. We played them earlier in the year and couldn’t get a win. We played them earlier in the tournament and couldn’t get a win either. When the stakes were the highest, we were able to get the win when it matters. It’s huge for the future as well. We know we can beat them on any given day.”
On battling back against Virginia after a three-run fourth inning:
“When you play a team like UVA, you have to have a short memory. We knew we would get a few more runs. You have to have faith in your hitters. After their three run inning, we had to just shake it off, get to the next pitch, get to the next batter and just see what happens.”
Virginia Quotes
Head Coach Brian O’Connor
Opening Statement:
“First, I’d like to congratulate William & Mary. They played a heck of a game certainly, it was a really good ballgame. We had our opportunities and we couldn’t capitalize, but I thought our guys really battled and showed up ready to play. Certainly the three runs they got in the second inning, things weren’t going well early on. I thought our guys really responded in that fourth inning coming back and scoring three runs and tying it up. It was a good battle out there and they deserve all the credit in the world for winning the ballgame. They deserve to win and they were better than us today and unfortunately this ends our season. We have to handle that as men, as players and coaches. I feel for the guys that won’t have a chance to wear this uniform again because I know how much it means to them and I know how much they’ve poured into it but I congratulate William & Mary, they did a nice job.”
On Tommy Doyle’s performance and how long the plan was to leave him in:
“We thought that he was still making good pitches and he left a ball up. To [Charles] Ameer’s credit, he put a great swing on the ball. Our plan was to take him out at some point that inning. He threw about 20 pitches yesterday and came back today and threw strong. I look at Tommy Doyle, and you think about what this kid has been through in a matter of 16 or 18 hours. He gives up the game a lot of people would say in the ninth inning in the pivotal 1-0 game and his coaches and teammates have enough confidence in him to bring him back in an elimination game. I think that says something. The guy hung in there and really battled.”
On his decision to start Daniel Lynch rather than Adam Haseley:
“No regrets. I love Adam, certainly Adam had a terrific year for us on the mound and obviously offensively too, but as I sat here late last night and thought about it as the decision maker of the program I felt it was important to put our team in the best position to win the entire tournament.”
Pitcher Tommy Doyle
On coming back on the mound after the previous night’s performance:
“Yeah, in playoffs anything can happen so after yesterday, today was like alright William & Mary gets my revenge from the other day. It was good, I wish I had capitalized on some pitches.”
On going back out in the seventh inning after the double play in the sixth:
“Yeah especially after that, any big double play is going to get you hyped up so going out into the seventh inning I was ready to go. I told [Karl] Kuhn I’d get the first batter, I missed a pitch and they capitalized on it so I can’t look back.”
Pitcher Daniel Lynch
On starting today’s game:
“Coach [Brian] O’Connor just told me to go as hard as I can for as long as I can this morning before he let me know I was going to start. So, I was going to take it an inning at a time and eat up innings and I wasn’t able to do that, but luckily I had guys like Tommy [Doyle] able to pick me up and work for a long time and eat up innings. I’m glad to have teammates like Tommy to do that for me.”
On the two bunt hits and its affect on the momentum:
“That’s just the way the game is. Sometimes that type of thing happens and you have to respond. They made two great bunts. That’s not a common thing to happen but it does happen, so it is frustrating but that’s just the game.”
Shortstop Daniel Pinero
On quick change of events from the previous night’s shock and the quick turn around to play an elimination game:
“It’s just crazy to think that this thing is over. Personally for me I’m a third year and I’m going to miss these guys a lot. We had a good season. We definitely battled today and this whole weekend, and like I said we had a good season. We played tough and I’m proud of my boys.”
On the team’s offense against William & Mary:
“I know we scored 17 runs against them in the first game. With our offense, I think that we definitely could have put a lot more runs up today, but like I said we battled and we swung it well but we didn’t come up with the win.”
