Hoos Advance to NCAA Championships for 17th Time

Baton Rouge, La. – Despite posting its highest 18-hole score of the tournament, the UVA men’s golf team advanced to the NCAA Championships after finishing fourth at the Baton Rouge regional site. UVA shot 13-over 301 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 17-over 881.
LSU, playing on its home course, won the regional at 2-over 866. The No. 6 Tigers shot 6-over 294 during the final round. ACC Champion Duke was second at 10-over 874 while reigning NCAA Champion Oregon was third at 15-over 879. Jacksonville defeated Northwestern in a two-hole playoff to earn the final berth from the site to the NCAA Championships.
Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) led the Cavaliers with a 12th-place finish. He shot 2-over 74 during the final round for a three-day total of 4-over 220. Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) tied for 17th at 6-over 222. Junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was 22nd at 223 and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) was 32nd at 225. Schaap posted UVA’s best final round score, shooting 1-over 73.
UVA got off to a good start during its final round as its four scoring players made the turn at 1-over par. The Cavaliers struggled down the stretch, recording just four birdies over the University Club’s back side to post a 12-over score for their combined final nine holes.
A strong first-round effort, shooting 6-under 282, put UVA in solid position to move on from the regional site.
Virginia will compete in the 30-team NCAA Championships May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farm in Sugar Grove, Ill. It marks the 17th time the Cavaliers have played in the national championship tournament. Last year UVA placed 22nd after three rounds but was not one of the 15 teams to advance to the fourth round of medal play. Bard was the Cavaliers’ top finisher, placing 17th overall.
