CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Orange team won its second straight one-run game in the 2017 Orange and Blue World Series on Monday, taking Game 2, 5-4, in a six-inning game at Davenport Field.
Both teams finished with seven hits. Nate Eikhoff (Jr., Bristow, Va.) went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI to lead the Orange, while Cameron Comer (So., Powell, Ohio) also had a pair of hits. Andy Weber (Jr., Aurora, Ohio) and Cayman Richardson (So., Mechanicsville, Va.) each recorded two hits for the Blue.
Orange starter Evan Sperling (Jr., Poquoson, Va.) allowed two earned runs and struck out five in four innings to earn the win, while Andrew Abbott (Fr., Halifax, Va.) got the final two outs for his second straight save. Blue starter Griff McGarry (Fr., Portola Valley, Calif.) allowed five runs in four innings and took the loss.
The Orange bolted to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles from Eikhoff and Comer as well as an RBI groundout from Devin Ortiz (Fr., Nutley, N.J.). The Blue countered with two runs in its half of the first on a two-run single from Caleb Knight (Sr., Checotah, Okla.).
The Orange pushed its lead back to three with two runs in the third on a two-run blast to right from Eikhoff. The Blue got a run back in the third on a Richardson RBI double and scored its final run in the fourth on a Charlie Cody (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) sac fly.
Game 3 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday. The seven games will be broken up into two three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a stand-alone Game 7. If a given team wins the first two games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.
