No. 11 Virginia Uses Big Second Half to Top Louisville 18-10

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (9-6, 4-2 ACC) picked up an 18-10 win at Louisville (6-9, 0-6 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
Virginia scored back-to-back goals to begin the game, but Louisville would use a 4-0 run to lead 4-2. UVA tied the game up 4-4 before Louisville scored back-to-back goals. The Cavaliers tied the game 6-6 going into the half. The game saw two more ties as the teams traded goals to begin the second half. The Cavaliers took control with a 6-0 run and allowed just two goals for the Cardinals in the final 22:40 of the game.
“It was nice to score 18 goals again and limit what our opponents were seeing in terms of their scoring opportunities,” head coach Julie Myers said. “It was a better game for us, starting strong and winning draws. We had a lot of people contributing offensively and consistently shut down Louisville’s attack. We are moving in the right direction, which is a good feeling.”
Junior Angie Loynaz (Cos Cobb, Conn.) sparked the Cavalier offense with a career-high four goals and two assists for six points. Sophomore Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) added four goals with a career-high 11 draw controls.
Senior Ana Hagerup (Washington, D.C.) had three goals, while senior Daniela Kelly (Rumson, N.J.) and juniors Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) had two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) had a season-high 13 saves with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Kaitlin Luzik (Alexandria, Va.) led the defense with four ground balls, three draws and two caused turnovers.
Virginia jumped on the board first with a free position goal by Mueller, then added to the lead when Shoemaker converted a free position. Louisville used a 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead over 12 minutes. Loynaz halted the run with a goal at 12:57 to cut it to one. Just 30 seconds later, senior Kasey Behr (Northport, N.Y.) scored her first of the afternoon to tie the game 4-4 with 12:27 to go in the first. Louisville scored two to lead 6-4. Loynaz found Mueller for a goal to cut it to one, then Loynaz scored her second of the afternoon to tie the game 6-6 with 2:18 to go in the first. The teams would take the tie into halftime.
Out of the break, Louisville jumped on the board first to take a 7-6 lead at 28:37. Virginia came back to score back-to-back goals to take an 8-7 lead. Loynaz tied the game to notch her first career hat trick. Shoemaker found Kelly driving for a score to take the lead. Louisville converted a free position to tie the game once again.
Hagerup sparked a 6-0 run with back-to-back goals. Hagerup had her first of the game with the assist from Jackson, then Loynaz found her driving the middle for another goal. Loynaz added to her total with her fourth of the day to push UVA’s lead to 11-8. Mueller then notched a hat trick and later found Shoemaker for a goal. Jackson completed the run with her first goal of the day at 13:47 on the assist from freshman Chloe Jones (Slingerlands, N.Y.). Louisville scored to cut it to 14-9, but Jackson responded with her second of the day.
Mueller notched her fourth goal after Louisville cut it back to four to give the Cavaliers a 16-10 lead. Shoemaker then found Kelly running for a goal to extend the Cavaliers’ lead. Hagerup ran past the Cardinals defense to score her hat trick and close out the win.
Virginia led shots (38-28), draw controls (23-7) and saves (13-8). Both teams finished with 18 ground balls and three free position goals.
Virginia will host its final home game of the regular-season against No. 4 James Madison on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
