CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia field hockey incoming freshman midfielder Greer Gill (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been named to the 2018-19 U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team, as announced Thursday (July 5) by U.S.A. Field Hockey.
Additionally, redshirt senior goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) and junior striker Erin Shanahan (Pasadena, Md.) were named to the U.S. Women’s Development Squad.
Selections to the U-21 and Development Junior National Camp came from the 2018 Young Women’s National Championship, which featured more than 100 elite female collegiate and post-collegiate athletes from around the country. The event concluded on June 29 and the Junior National Camp took place June 30 to July 3.
Gill has been a member of the US U19 Junior National Team for the last two years, competing with the squad in Germany in 2017 and Ireland this year. The 2017-19 Virginian-Pilot Student-Athlete of the Year was named the 2017 VISAA Division I Virginia State Field Hockey Player of the Year following her senior season at Norfolk Academy. She was a two-time NFHCA High School First Team All-American, two time NFHCA All-Region and three-time VISAA All-State First Team honoree.
Sophomores Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) and Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) have been offered a trial for the U21 team at the conclusion of the 2018 collegiate season.
Lucas was a goalkeeper for the 2017-18 USWNT National Development Squad, competing in a four-game test series against Chile’s Women’s National Team and U19 Junior National Team in May in Santiago, Chile.
Shanahan, who has scored 11 goals with nine assists for the Cavaliers, was a member of the 2015-16 USA Women’s Indoor U19 National Team and earned an invitation to last year’s U21 Junior National Camp.
To account for the transitional phase from the U-21 USWNT to the senior USWNT, the U.S. Women’s National Development Squad was introduced in November 2016 to nurture the talent of college students who no longer are permitted to be on the junior team due to age restrictions.
