Virginia vs. North Carolina
January 25, 2018
Virginia Head Coach Joanne Boyle
Opening Statement:
“Excited about the win. It’s nice to be at the half-way mark and look back and see what we’ve done and what’s left to do. I’m proud of the girls tonight. If you look at the stat sheet, you see five people in double figures and 18 assists, just sharing that basketball has been great chemistry for us. There are still things to clean up, obviously, but it’s been a good run for us so far.”
On if the team focused on a hot start:
“Honestly we are just trying to get the ball from side to side and see what they give us. We haven’t called a ton of quick hitters in the first quarter, just trying to get a rhythm and see how they’re going to defend our continuity offense. We have probably been spending more time doing that than anything. Out of the continuity, there are just a lot of different reads, so working particularly on the different reads we might see depending on how people are playing us has been more of a focus of ours.”
On playing a number of ranked teams in the second half of the season:
“For me, it’s all going to be in the details. We do four things well. When we rebound the basketball, when our transition defense is on point, when we have great effort and communication and when we win the 50/50 balls we are in every game. We are going to have to do what we’ve been doing and take it up a notch and be consistent in all of those categories. I think there’s a lot of confidence in this team, just to know we have the ability to be in and win every game. It’s going to be a fight. The meat of the season is coming down the stretch.”
On seeing the team take care of business:
“It’s great because it’s a team that has been maturing since last year. All non-conference and all through the season. Ebb and flow, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes we have great leads and people make a run and we can just cut it off at whatever point we need to cut it off. We have been in different situations, and I think that this team has just shown a level of maturity this year to handle the different scenarios that have presented themselves throughout the games because they have all been different.”
Sophomore Guard Dominique Toussaint
On the key to bouncing back from a loss at Duke:
“Refocusing on what we wanted to do for our short-term goals and our long-term goals. Our short-term was just to beat UNC and we came out with the win.”
On Brianna Tinsley and J’Kyra Brown coming off the bench taking pressure off of her as a shooter:
“It allows me to get to the wing and get different looks on the offensive side rather than trying to orchestrate the offense.”
Senior Forward Lauren Moses
On tonight’s game being their most complete of the season:
“I don’t know if it was our most complete game, but I feel like as a team we were confident and we were sharing the ball really well so it worked well for us. Knowing a team like UNC is very physical, we made sure we got the ball to the hot hand and the open hand. We had a lot of good drives and kicks and dump offs.”
On how coming off the bench helps her offensively:
“It’s a totally different perspective. I get to see how they’re playing [Felicia Aiyeotan], obviously we are two different players, however, I can still see if they’re looking to front us on the post or even how they’re guarding on the pick and rolls. It’s coming to my advantage. It’s different, but I’m enjoying it.”
