CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A pair of Virginia field hockey players have been selected as the ACC Field Hockey Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday (Oct. 23) by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Freshman Greer Gill (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named the Offensive Player of the Week while teammate Carrera Lucas earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Gill scored the game-winning goal in Virginia’s 3-1 victory over No. 2 Maryland on Sunday. She scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the game, one seven minutes into the contest and another two minutes later, to put the Cavaliers ahead to stay.
Lucas played a key role as 23rd-ranked Virginia posted wins over No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 2 Maryland. On the week, the goalkeeper came up with 10 saves on 14 shots, including eight in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over the Terps.
These are the first player of the week honors for the Cavaliers this season. It is the third Defensive Player of the Week award in Lucas’ career.
